Quantum Computing

Quantum computing is a new innovative area that shows great promise. Some physical processes can be used to our advantage to process information using Qubits. Each qubit can be in a state of superposition (i.e. in multiple states at once) and entanglement (different qubits can correlate data instantaneously). Qubits enable small amounts of information to be analysed in parallel, with exponential speedups compared to classical computing. These systems are susceptible to noise and need specialised low temperature and shielded environments. Quantum computing shows great potential but there is still uncertainty whether large scale systems are currently possible. Small scale systems can quickly and accurately model complex systems that cannot be analysed or are expensive to analyse using classical systems. Several cloud computing companies allow API access to quantum computers on an hourly or one-shot basis. QC can be integrated with AI systems. AI is better on high-volume large-scale datasets as QC currently needs significant time for input and output operations. Information can be encoded into qubits where they are represented in Hilbert space. This multidimensional space allows the quantum computer to spot higher dimensional patterns that AI may not spot. Using QC only makes sense for high value analytics, but in time this expertise may give companies a significant global advantage in the near future.
